Inherited Engagement Ring Ideas: Embracing Tradition with a Personal Touch

When it comes to engagement rings, every piece tells a story. They are more than just beautiful accessories; they symbolize commitment, love, and a shared future. Among the many ways to mark this enduring bond is through inherited engagement rings—pieces that carry not just exquisite craftsmanship but also the cherished memories of those who wore them before.

Why Choose an Inherited Ring?

  1. Sentimental Value: An inherited ring carries the weight of family history. It’s a tangible piece of your loved ones’ past and can serve as a daily reminder of their love stories.

  2. Unique Design: Vintage rings often feature intricate designs that you simply can’t find in modern pieces. A unique cut or setting can make your engagement ring stand out in a sea of contemporary styles.

  3. Sustainability: Opting for an inherited ring is an eco-friendly choice. It reduces the demand for newly mined materials and gives new life to a piece that might otherwise be forgotten.

  4. Cost-Effective: Inherited rings can often be more affordable than new ones, especially considering the intricate craftsmanship usually found in vintage jewelry.

Show Off Your Heirloom!

In our community space, we invite you to share your inherited engagement rings. Post pictures of your stunning pieces and tell us the stories behind them! How did they come into your family? What makes them special to you? Were there any renovations or customizations made to fit your personal style?

Here are some ideas to spark discussion:

  • Gemstones with Stories: Was your ring passed down from a grandmother? Did she choose a unique gemstone for its meaning? Share the types of stones and their significance in your family tradition!

  • Art from the Past: Does your ring feature a specific cut or setting (e.g., Art Deco, Victorian, etc.)? How does it reflect the bygone era it came from, and what modern tastes does it incorporate?

  • Setting the Scene: Was it necessary to customize the ring to fit your lifestyle? Discuss how inherited rings can be adapted for everyday wear without losing their sentimental value.

Learn Together!

Our community isn’t just about showcasing rings; it’s also a platform for education. Engage in conversations about different gem types, popular cuts, and various settings. Here are some discussion points to get you started:

  • Cut and Clarity: What cuts and styles are trending today? Discuss the pros and cons of modern shapes versus vintage ones.

  • Caring for Your Heirlooms: Share tips on maintaining the beauty of older rings. What professional cleaning techniques have you found effective?

  • Ring Resizing and Styling: Have you made any adjustments to your inherited ring? Discuss how you approached the resizing process or whether you modified it to suit your preferences.

Join the Conversation!

Whether you’re looking to share your own inherited ring, seeking inspiration for your future engagement, or diving deep into the world of gemstones, our community space welcomes you! Use #InheritedRings to showcase your pieces and spark conversations. Let’s celebrate the beauty of love, tradition, and artistry together!

My vintage loving self does *not* want you to change it.

But, you could take two of the tapered baguettes and use them as side stones.

You could have the rest set into earrings.

Main stone in the middle and the smaller ones as baguettes on either side

Oohhhh… I’d do the large stone as just a very simple solitaire on a plain band and then make the others into your wedding band, either deliberately uneven and just recessed into a band lengthwise, or a sunburst halo like this:

That’s so cool!! I love the baguettes and selfishly want you to leave them exactly where they are. But you COULD remove the round diamond and reset it however you’d like. I think the ring would still be cool without the round diamond.

I would take the main stone out, then I would try to rework the original ring to basically be kept in it’s original style (just without the setting for the large stone). Its a pretty interesting style and if you’re not big on jewelery you may appreciate having the original ring with its sentimental value instead of just other new piece of jewelry you may not wear often.

I’d personally remake it. There’s a lot of gold to work with. I’d ask the jeweler to melt it all down and make the engagement ring AND wedding band with it. I’d personally use the small round diamonds and Gypsy-set them into the wedding band. I’d use two of the baguettes for side stones with E-ring

I would leave it. If you must I would put the round diamond in a simple solataire and keep the rest of the ring as is after removing the prongs.

You could still wear them together sometimes but also have a more simple option

To add onto the idea of taking out the main diamond to use in a new ring/piece of jewelry, you could replace it with an inexpensive stone of your choice

Keep it as a keepsake. Please don’t destroy that vintage ring.

Make a new ring from a new lab diamond, diamond rings are not expensive anymore.

    I personally wouldn’t touch it.

It’s so unique. Use it as a cocktail ring and get a different e ring if it’s not your taste.

i inherited my grandma’s ring (I don’t have it with me, but it is chunky too)

Thought about altering it for me at first, but I decided not to in the end. It’s been 4 years and I am so glad I didn’t.

Everytime I see it and wear it it reminds me of her and seeing it on her when she was alive.

It’s a fun piece, keep it fun 😉

People on here always balk at the idea of changing vintage rings and I’m in total agreement if it’s a genuine antique from a century ago, but these rings from (I’m guessing) the 70s-80s are so bulky and that’s not everyone’s style😭 I would do a solitaire with the main diamond and maybe you could also use two of the tapered baguette diamonds like this?

I immediately saw this post and thought to myself, “[they have got to be friends with the other person who posted a similar ring!”](https://www.reddit.com/r/EngagementRings/s/kAWEQPAJzv)

I think the older rings like this are SO COOL. They’re unique and bold in a way you don’t see anymore.

If you’re really set on rebuilding it I would go on Pinterest and just type in a few words to describe what you generally like, and keep refining from there.

    Congrats! 🤍

The tiny diamonds are pretty useless, but the tapered baguettes would make nice side stones in a new setting. I don’t care for the ring, but it is certainly unique. Do you know when it was given to your grandmother?

You could take the main diamond and turn it into a simple solitaire ring or pendant necklace you could wear everyday and leave the rest of the ring as is to be worn as a fun cocktail ring kind of like this!

I would considering killing someone for that ring as-is. I’m not saying I *would,* but is definitely think about it.

If she likes vintage stuff at all you should leave that the way it is. I would propose with it like that and design something new together if she’s not into it. You could probably remove the head holding the round stone and just have the band as its own ring.

This is striking! If it were me I’d keep it complete. However, I think using the large stone for a new ring and replacing it with some sort of colored gem in this one could be really cool. You get the ring you want and you’re keeping the integrity of the antique.
