Is the Bowtie on My Marquise That Bad? A Discussion on Engagement Ring Cuts
Hello, fellow ring enthusiasts! 💍✨
Today, I want to dive into a topic that I’ve seen bubbling up in our community: the infamous “bowtie effect” on marquise-cut diamonds. Many of us are excited to show off our unique engagement rings and the gorgeous gems that adorn them, but sometimes we find ourselves faced with questions about aesthetics and quality. So, let’s unpack this phenomenon together!
What is the Bowtie Effect?
For those who may be unfamiliar, the bowtie effect is an optical phenomenon that occurs in certain diamond cuts, especially marquise, oval, and pear shapes. When light hits the stone, it can create a dark shadow that resembles a bowtie across the center. While some aficionados see this as a charming characteristic, others consider it a flaw that detracts from the diamond’s overall beauty.
Why Bowties Happen
The bowtie effect is largely due to the unique faceting and elongated shape of the marquise cut. The arrangement of facets can cause light to reflect in certain ways, creating dark regions in the gem. While some may view this as a negative, it’s essential to remember that each diamond—and its characteristics—brings its personality to the table!
The Debate: Is It That Bad?
Pros of the Bowtie Effect:
- Character: Some find the bowtie gives their ring a distinct look, setting it apart from more traditional cuts.
- Illusion of Size: The longer shape may enhance the perception of size, making it appear larger on the finger.
Cons of the Bowtie Effect:
- Dark Shadows: For those who are more traditional in their taste, the bowtie can be distracting and diminish a diamond’s sparkle.
- Inconsistent Quality: Jewelers may interpret and cut diamonds differently, meaning some marquise cuts will have a more pronounced bowtie than others.

Conclusion
At the end of the day, beauty is subjective. Every engagement ring tells a story, and even the bowtie effect can add a narrative twist to yours. Looking forward to your stories and opinions! 💖

I think it’s beautiful. I personally like the style of it.
It’s normal. Don’t let some random jeweler ruin how much you love your ring.
All marquise and elongated cut diamonds will have some degree of bow tie! I think yours looks fine and not particularly noticeable
All marquise diamonds have bowties, the more you elongate any stone (pear, oval, marquise) the more pronounced it will be. I would not sweat it, as long as the center of the diamond is not a black vortex, then you are fine. Sometimes it adds character and contrast! You loved it before you took it to him, I would not worry about it, looks like a stunning ring!
So marquise, pears and even some oval cuts have this bow tie effect because of the way the stones are cut. It’s difficult to find a marquise without some sort of bow tie effect to it unless you want to pay top dollar.
My opinion: Yes, your stone does have the bow tie effect, but this is normal. I have a feeling this guy was purposely trying to make you insecure so that he could sell you another stone and make money off you. If you had not noticed the bow tie before and were previously happy with the stone, I say leave it alone.
No, it’s beautiful
Your stone is gorgeous!
Not bad at all
girl that is gorgeous. stunning
So this ring is gorgeous and I would have never noticed the bow tie in the first place. It looks beautiful on you 🤩
I wanted a marquis cut ring and my first thought on this was “STUNNING” before reading the caption. Don’t let other people tell you otherwise!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE YOUR RING
Your ring is simply gorgeous, sincerely another toyota girlie

No not bad. Looks average/normal
My oval has a decent bowtie, I didn’t even know what it was before this sub and I don’t care now. You have a gorgeous ring!! Just enjoy how beautiful and sparkly it is and what it represents
Jeweler knew exactly what he was doing and was hoping to cash in on a diamond upgrade. It’s part of the cut. Yours looks beautiful. Go to a different jeweler who doesn’t criticize your diamond.
I am redoing my set with a new diamond my husband bought me. I went to probably 20. One jeweler spent the whole time negging me about how he could have gotten me a better diamond cheaper and my husband made a big mistake buying my stone. (Strong disagree, btw). Not a single other person did anything but politely compliment and work with me. Funny thing is that the negging guy didn’t know that somebody had strongly recommended him to me – I was shopping around and fully planned on having him make my ring once I decided. Definitely not anymore. I found a much better fit.
Why are we supposed to dislike bow ties?
Edit: genuine question lol
This ring is BEAUTIFUL. Don’t listen to the jeweler.
I personally LOVE the look of a bow tie. I think your stone is gorgeous 🩷
Honestly I have always liked the look of a bow tie, even before I knew the word for it lol
Girl, this ring is stunning. Please don’t let some rando – who only wants your money- try to convince you otherwise.
I don’t even know what I’m looking at regarding a bow tie, but I think it’s an absolutely gorgeous ring.
i think it’s stunning hun
I see it, but I mean I also see an angry face. It is just lighting, and probably comes and goes. Up to you if it bothers you.
i love it? feels fancy. all cuts are different and we’re all different people. i would leave a review regardless though so they don’t ruin other peoples experiences – it might something that somebody with a neurodivergence cant get past and ruins their ring for them.
Mine has a kinda similar thing going on now that I look at it. Your ring is gorgeous!
The jeweller spouted FUD, and it was effective in making you open to whatever solution he will want to sell you on.
Nice ring. I’d be very pleased with it, personally, super tasteful and well-executed.
If I didn’t invite critique of a piece, I’d tell the jeweler where to go and leave a public review stating the facts.
I remember when I went into a high street jeweler (not a chain BTW) to have something sized and there was a critical remark made. I was only too happy to lay down the facts with it being an inherited antique heirloom that had major sentimental value to whom it belongs, passed down through several gens, and I said that they could either keep their uninvited opinions to themselves or I would happily take my business elsewhere. I took my business elsewhere and went to the same tiny independent jeweler my family had been using for decades. Zero regrets.
These people constantly pushing and fishing for sales can shove it up their arse. It costs them more long-term biz than it gains.
It’s very pretty, but I can’t take my eyes off of your square knuckle. That’s cool!
Before reading the issue is genuinely looked at this and said holy shit that’s so gorgeous and I think if my boyfriend doesn’t give me this I might sob
No not at all. It’s beautiful!
It’s a stunning ring. No one can tell you how your ring or diamond should look to be defined as beautiful. 😍
Years ago a jeweler mentioned a flaw in my stone. At the time, I thought it was cool, because that meant it was a little different than others. But then every time I looked at it, I saw the flaw. Fast forward, I mentioned the flaw to another jeweler and I learned what I thought was the flaw was not actually a flaw. The flaw was something else I hadn’t noticed before.
All this to say, don’t let someone influence your view of your beautiful ring!
It’s beautiful! Elongated fancy shapes have bow ties. It’s not a bad thing unless you don’t like the look. Don’t let him yuck your yum!
Its gorgeous!! I love them. I think it makes it look so unique.
I don’t see it
I keep seeing people talking about their bow ties in their diamonds like it’s a bad thing, but I kinda like them! Adds character 🙂
At the risk of sounding dumb… what’s a bowtie on a ring??
Yes it has a bow tie.
Yes it is noticeable.
Yes it is normal.
BECAUSE ALL MARQUISES HAVE ONE NO MATTER WHAT, some more pronounced than other.
That jeweler is an ass trying to sell you something extra, because I bet this was not done in an educational sort of way.
Keep on loving your ring, upsellers are gonna upscale and haters are gonna hate; perfectionists are gonna be uppity ) I am a perfectionist only for myself and I still love your ring, it is pretty and judging on just that one picture it is not that easy to say how much of a bow tie you have, because the facets at the bottom towards your palm are a bit blurred)
So people being AH can go kick rocks and certainly not that one!
And it is a nice sizeable guy btw. Love the big enough but still dainty, bling but not flashy.
Girl, it is awesome.
