Considering Resetting My Mother’s Earring as an Engagement Ring: Thoughts?
Hey, ring enthusiasts! 💍
I’m excited to kick off a discussion about a deeply personal topic that has been on my mind lately: the idea of resetting my mother’s beautiful earring into an engagement ring. As I embark on my own journey into love and commitment, the thought of incorporating a meaningful family heirloom into this special moment really resonates with me.
Why Resetting an Heirloom is Special
-
Sentimental Value: There’s something incredibly touching about reimagining a piece of jewelry that carries cherished family memories and stories. My mother wore these earrings on various special occasions, and I can’t help but think of the joy they represent.
-
Unique Personalization: A reset allows me to blend my personal style with a piece of family history. I can choose the cut, setting, and even additional stones to make it truly mine while keeping the essence of my mother’s piece.
-
Sustainable Choice: In today’s world, resourcefulness is essential! Choosing a reset not only gives new life to an existing piece but also aligns with a more sustainable approach to jewelry.
Considerations Before Resetting
-
Emotional Impact: I want to make sure my mom is on board with this. What if she has her own memories tied to the earrings? I plan to have an open conversation with her about the idea.
-
Design Compatibility: The earring might have a different style than what’s traditionally seen in engagement rings. I’m excited to explore ways to modernize its design while still honoring its original look.
-
Cost Implications: Resetting can be a cost-effective option compared to buying a brand new ring, but I need to consider potential additional costs for resetting and reworking the piece.

It’s literally perfect!
I think it will look beautiful as an engagement ring, or an heirloom ring if you decide to go another route. I know it is not helpful to say, but whether or not it works as an engagement ring is up to you. Do you like how yellow gold looks on you?
I think it would look great!
Omggg it’s so pretty!! I actually think it looks stunning with the yellow gold but it’s your ring so you should choose whatever metal you like to wear best.
Is the other earring still around or is this one a loner? The other one could be reset as a matching necklace.
I think the yellow gold looks great on you! The color of that sapphire is amazing. If you have both earrings, you could use the other one as a matching pendant.
I’m here to say it’s absolutely PERFECT. yes yes yes
my absolute favorite style of ring
I was so confused beause it looks so perfect as a ring that I wasn’t sure what the top dangly bit was! It is gorgeous! I think yellow gold looks lovely on you – I know nothing about color theories ut if you like it that is enough! 🙂
It would be STUNNING!!
Yes. This is timeless looking!
I’m biased because this is basically a bigger, gold version of my own ring, but THIS IS LOVELY. The yellow gold is stunning.
Love it as a ring! Do you have the other one? You could make it into a matching pendant necklace.

My engagement ring is similar! Do it!!

This will be STUNNING – ask me how I know (mine is almost identical but with a midnight sapphire and in white gold, so I’m horribly biased haha)
I think it would be so perfect. The yellow gold does look harmonious with your skin, plus the sentimentality just takes it the extra step. If you think you’d prefer a cooler tone metal tho, what if you just had the band in white gold or platinum? Mixed metal rings can look super unique!
This looks amazing. And your skin has yellow undertones – yellow gold works for you.
I personally love this style in white or platinum gold. It gives more of a princess Diana vibe. However it’s still gorgeous in yellow gold.
Looks lovely. Just make sure your jeweler assesses the structural integrity of the settings, so see if they need to be fortified.
Rings need to be super sturdy bc they have the most potential to get banged around, and earrings the least; as well as people usually want their earrings to be light. So it’s possible the settings are more delicate than will survive long term as a ring.
Woah, it’s breathtakingly beautiful! What a wonderful unique idea! The yellow gold looks beautiful with your skin tone! I say go for it and then come back and show us once it’s done!
Perfection. I vote yes!
It looks really similar to my friend’s engagement ring that is STUNNING! You definitely do it! I think the gold looks nice on your skin tone, at least in this picture.
Looks just like mine!

Perfect! Now what to do with the other earring? Matching pendent necklace?

I’m biased but I love it!
Oh hell no to platinum. This looks stunning. Very princess Diana.
I think it’s beautiful and perfect!
My husband bought me this ring for our anniversary a couple years ago so obviously I think your idea is a great one and perfect!
