Warning About Tiffany & Co: The Engagement Ring Dilemma
Hello, engagement ring enthusiasts! Today, I want to spark a much-needed conversation about a brand that many consider the pinnacle of luxury when it comes to engagement rings: Tiffany & Co. While their iconic blue box and exquisite craftsmanship are undeniable, it’s imperative to dig deeper and consider what’s really behind the price tag.
The Allure of Tiffany & Co.
Tiffany & Co. has long been synonymous with romance and elegance. Their marketing has perfected the art of desire: shimmering diamonds, romantic proposals, and blue boxes that symbolize everlasting love. But before you dive into buying that stunning Tiffany engagement ring, let’s explore some key points.
Price vs. Quality
One of the biggest concerns surrounding Tiffany engagement rings is the cost. You might find yourself paying a significant premium that doesn’t always correlate with quality. This brings about the age-old question: are you paying for the brand name?
Discussion Prompt: Have you ever compared a Tiffany ring to similar styles from other jewelers? What were your findings regarding price and quality?
Sourcing and Ethical Concerns
Another crucial issue is the sourcing of diamonds. While Tiffany has made strides towards ethically sourcing their stones and adopting sustainable practices, it’s essential to be diligent. Not all diamonds are created equal, and understanding where your stone comes from is vital.
Discussion Prompt: What are your thoughts on the ethical implications of diamond sourcing? How important is this aspect to you while choosing a ring?
Customization Limitations
Tiffany & Co. is known for their beautifully made settings, but the options can be somewhat limited compared to the plethora of custom designs available through independent jewelers. With the rise of custom rings tailored to personal tastes, many couples are opting for more unique expressions of their love.
Discussion Prompt: For those who have chosen custom rings, what was your experience like? Do you think customization adds more meaning to the piece?
Evaluating Alternatives
Gone are the days when purchasing an engagement ring meant heading straight to the nearest Tiffany & Co. While they offer gorgeous pieces, there are countless jewelers, both local and online, that provide stunning rings at competitive prices without sacrificing quality.
Discussion Prompt: What are some of your favorite alternative brands or local jewelers? Share your experiences or recommendations!

Did you get any insurance on the ring? Sorry I’m just not familiar with Tiffany’s policies
I’m sorry this happened to you. As I’ve been ring shopping, I’ve been hearing many bad reviews of Tiffany&Co and their recent decline in quality, durability, and service. I hope a local jeweler can help you out.
I hate this for you!
I have had some terrible experiences with tco myself. They charge a premium and do not give the premium service you would expect. I’ve had better service at my mom/pop jeweler. Tco: $80 to remove 3 links from their ring for sizing. Mom/pop: $0 to fix my custom engagement ring that they made.
Yep, i was shopping non e diamond rings and went with a 7th generation local jeweler instead. I’ll never go back to Tiffany who charge like 3x what I paid for similar materials and IMO, superior craftsmanship and design.
So sorry this happened to you! Tiffany has the aspirational jewelry allure and “every woman’s dream” to have a Tiffany’s jewelry, it’s unfortunate how little if any customer service companies are providing these days. I think you should post this on twitter and or IG and tag them, it seems to be the only to get help these days
Thank you so much for sharing. I never would have expected them to have such bad customer service!
Ever since Tiffany was bought by LVMH, their customer service has been abysmal
I don’t know much, but if I had a platinum ring warping I would want the metal tested. I don’t know how they would do that but it’s suspicious.
Just a heads up that for the Shane and Co warranty you have to bring in your item every 6 months for inspection or it voids the warranty. They also won’t automatically replace a stone if the ring looks like it was damaged outside of normal wear. There are multiple stipulations so just make sure you completely understand all the requirements before you buy or you might have a similar experience.
I always wanted a Tiffany ring. Cliche, sure. But when my now husband and I started chatting about what ring styles I liked, Tiffany was a no go for him. He flat out refused. He was like we get you whatever style, but never Tiffany. It’s overpriced and pretentious and terrible customer service. Once they denied me entrance into their store bc I was wearing jeans and a tshirt! I am so sorry you went through this. Seems like they’re kind of a joke at this point.
My wedding band is from Tiffany’s but it’s 100 years old — no stones loose, still in great condition. It’s crazy how quality has gone down, not up, over the years.
Find a local family jeweler that you can trust and get the ring insured.
First, I’m sorry you went through this experience.
Something like this should absolutely be covered, always shop local. Large companies just suck and ship out your ring somewhere else to be worked on. Find a local place that does everything on site. Your ring should never leave the place you dropped it off
I’m not sure the size of the diamond you lost, but $590 is ridiculous. Even $295 sounds like an overcharge. That ring looks maybe 2-2.5mm based on the picture? It shouldn’t cost you more than like $150 to replace that, tops. Almost double for “half the cost” is crazy.
The first place we went to look at rings T & Co. So glad we didn’t purchase from them. We ended up going with a local business, and they’ve taken care of everything for us with great service. They even gave me a canvas beach bag made my Land’s End filled with all sorts of gift cards to local spas and salons, and some other cute little gifts in addition to champagne and espresso.
Even if we tried to view this through the eyes of the company…. if you chose a ring from THEIR STORE that’s so delicate it’s prone to breaking easily, then that’s their fault for putting such an easily damaged ring on their showroom floor. They are supposed to discern what accurately represents their “timeless” quality craftsmanship. You could buy a ring from WalMart that would last longer than 9 months.
I feel like this isn’t the first time I’ve heard this story recently. Wow that’s really crazy!
I wear the complete eternity 3.08 ct daily, I’m constantly doing things, and I’ve NEVER had a single issue
I also wear a 2.25 emerald cut solitaire and haven’t had ANY problems
I imagine Tiffany’s has a billion+ diamonds in stock & the lab diamond market has put them in a bad position. Be interesting to see what impact this has had on their stock. I could very well be wrong but I don’t recall them ever having this type of petty customer service issues. Tiffany’s used to stand for something, maybe not so much anymore. Thanks for the update & I applaud your decision to replace the ring at a more reputable jeweler. Can’t believe I’m saying that about Tiffany’s!!
I love other Tiffany and co jewelry like necklaces and bracelets but their diamonds jewelry I’ve heard is extremely over price. You’re paying for the name and it’s unfortunate they don’t live up to the name
This makes me sad. I know quality everywhere isn’t what it used to be but I had no idea Tiffany had gotten that bad. I have an eternity band from there that I’ve had almost 16 years, I never take it off and I’ve never had an issue with it.
Stumbled upon this subreddit and I couldn’t agree more. Their product quality, service, and everything feels so cheap now.
The customer service at T&Co dropped significantly in 3 different state+country I’ve visited. None of them made me feel like I was getting premium service. None of them felt luxury inside (the stores).
I’ve tried returning whenever I saw new accessories I wanted online, and seeing them in-person was always a disappointment. Why does everything look, feel, and act so cheap now??
Tiffany & Co is no longer its own company since 2021 when Louis Vuitton bought the majority share in it. Since then customer service has been abysmal.
We bought our wedding rings in 2021 and were told that every other year we would get free lifetime service on them both. Two years later when I go to get them serviced ready for the big day, I was told that wasn’t the case at all and I would be charged £200 for each ring. The saleswoman was very embarrassed and it was her who told me that it had changed since the takeover, and that I should contact the store I got them from to see if they would honour it for me. I never did get round to doing it.
But prices have gone up and quality has gone down. Story of the world now.
A platinum band?! Wow, this is simply poor craftsmanship. Insane!! The price is outrageous, but okay.
I am wearing something similar for years now and I do WORK cook and clean with it. It’s not even scratched. Made to measure locally.
So support your local business and get the next piece there.
I’m really sorry that you experienced that!!
A friend of mine got her engagement ring from Tiffany and the diamond fell out after about a year and when she contacted customer service they refused to fix it, said it was standard wear & tear. I get the sense with Tiffany that you are paying for the brand name and not the actual services they are meant to provide
As someone who used to work in fine jewelry and who worked at a Tiffany & Co authorized retailer for years – I watched the decline in quality of their products first hand. I personally only buy their silver products unless there’s a particularly good design collection – like I have a bone cuff for both wrists, but I just love the design. And even their silver isn’t half as good as it used to be, but I like the style of some of the collections.
You shouldn’t have to pay for eternity band stone replacements. Even the mall heavy jewelry store offered plans that covered all damage and resizing.
That exact same ring with the exact same everything would cost 1/4 from anywhere else lol
