PSA for Non-Diamonds: Sparkling in Unique Ways

Engagement rings have long been dominated by the classic diamond, but that’s changing as modern couples look to express their individuality and values. Enter the world of non-diamond gems that are just as stunning and rich in meaning. Whether you’re sporting a sapphire, emerald, or moissanite, this is an open invitation to showcase your beautiful engagement ring and share your story!

The Allure of Alternative Gems

1. Beyond Tradition:
Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but they aren’t the only option! Non-diamond engagement rings offer couples a chance to step outside of the traditional and embrace something unique. For example:

  • Sapphires: Known for their striking blue hue, sapphires symbolize wisdom and nobility. They’ve been a popular choice since royalty donned them.

  • Moissanite: With brilliance that even surpasses diamonds, moissanite is an ethical and cost-effective alternative. Plus, it shines bright in any setting!

  • Emeralds: Their lush green tones evoke feelings of love and rebirth. Not to mention, they’re a gorgeous statement piece.

2. Ethical Considerations:
More couples are considering the origins of their gemstones. Many non-diamond stones can be sourced ethically, allowing for a more conscious purchase. Sharing your journey of how you selected your stone could inspire others to think about the impact their choices have!

Join the Conversation!

Share Your Ring:
We’d love to see your non-diamond engagement rings! Post a picture and tell us the story behind your choice. Did you pick it for its color, meaning, or ethical sourcing? Maybe it was a family heirloom or a custom piece that reflects your relationship!

Discuss Cuts and Settings:
Are you mesmerized by a particular cut? Perhaps you adore the sophistication of a cushion cut emerald or the vintage charm of a rose-cut moissanite. Share your insights and advice on settings that enhance the beauty of these gems—whether classic, vintage, or modern.

Learn Together:
This is also a space to educate and be educated. What do you wish you knew when selecting your non-diamond? Are there particular care tips or maintenance tricks you’ve learned? From ensuring your ring looks fresh to understanding the best ways to source gems, your knowledge could benefit fellow ring enthusiasts!

Challenges and Triumphs

Not every engagement ring journey is without its hurdles. Whether it’s dealing with sizing issues, maintaining your gem, or navigating family opinions on going non-diamond, sharing those experiences can foster a supportive community. Let’s talk about the challenges you faced and how you overcame them!

Conclusion: Celebrate Individuality

In a world that often pushes conformity, non-diamond engagement rings allow for personal expression and creativity. By sharing your stories, photos, and wisdom, we create a vibrant community that celebrates love in all its forms.

So, post a photo of your stunning non-diamond gem, engage in lively discussions, and let’s make this a sparkling hub for all things engagement rings! What treasures are you excited to share? 💍✨

Oh it’s not just non diamonds. My first ring is a diamond and stopped wearing it because it would fish hook everything and I didn’t want to scratch the kids. I mostly wear a plain band at home.

    It’s a fabulous ring.

But if the priority is practicality, how about getting a simple plain band for daily wear and making a custom necklace with the same design and type of stone (bezel Emerald, yellow gold)? That way it would still feel like it’s with you, but without getting damaged, so you could also wear it everyday.

My wedding ring is a sapphire, and 18k gold. It is over 20 years old, I have worn it almost daily, and it looks great. The stone is due for a polish, but honestly it has held up wonderfully. I do wear it on my left hand, which is my nondominant hand. And I designed a low profile ring. I have two kiddos, and I always wore my ring on a daily basis. Never to the gym or pool, but otherwise yes! As Joan Didion said, every day is all there is.

If I ever get married, I would want a purple sapphire. I love amethyst, but a sapphire would be able to take more abuse.

I love alexandrite, but that’s very expensive.

Solid ring, captive stone. I would rate that for daily wear.

I always admired my grandmother’s rings they were imperfect from daily wear and tear but still so beautiful and and perfect in their own way. Literally worn down from wear.

I have captive stones on my wedding band, my wife has claws but that’s what matches our style and our activities.
Don’t be afraid to let your ring grow with you it’s part of the journey and yours looks built for battle, I wouldn’t be concerned in the slightest about your ring seeing daily wear. let it gain some personality of it’s own and tell it’s own story. If you keep it bubble wrapped it’s not really sharing the journey with you.

Just to be clear, scratches and blemishes are your own touch. Nobody is perfect, let that baby see the world don’t hide it away. Be proud of it, enjoy it and tell your partner you love it by showing it your world.

I’ve had these longevity concerns myself as my ring is a green garnet, but it’s secondhand and hallmarked to 2001 – so it’s lived a life before me and is still in stunning condition. That is to say, your emerald is gorgeous and the bezel setting looks safe and secure, so I’m sure your ring is much more durable than you may fear!

Honestly it’s in a bezel setting, it’s insured. You can’t tell if there are any inclusions in the actual emerald itself (from the photo), that would be my concern with everyday wear (if you hit the stone at the wrong angle and there was some type of inclusion, it’s more likely to chip/shatter/break that way), but I wouldn’t be overly concerned.
    It’s stunning. I’d wear that ring daily 💍 😍

These are ours. We have ordered them in 925 Sterling silver and we can’t for them to arrive.

The main stone is alexandrite and in one the accent stones are moissanite.

I’m actually not a fan of diamond.

For what it’s worth, I have a diamond engagement ring and I didn’t even find that practical with a baby or young toddler either. When I was a stay at home parent with a baby I didn’t wear my rings because I was changing diapers all day. Then even with a potty trained toddler I hardly wore my rings because I was lifting my child all day, which isn’t great on rings. I would say it only became practical for me to wear my rings again when my child went into daycare full time.

Emeralds are kind of delicate. If you want a non-diamond, stick to sapphire or moissanite for this reason. They should be durable enough even though they aren’t diamonds.

I have a Sapphire and it’s holding up well to everything, and my LO is 10 months. I think if you’re going for a non diamond just check the Mohs hardness scale- my cousin got an opal that cracked from her reaching into the freezer on a hot summer day. Also check to see if your stone will get cloudy over time- one stone notorious for this is Morganite. If you’re going for a softer stone a bezel set is the way to go, that will protect your stone the most (good choice OP). If you like the look of little stones set along your band, I highly recommend considering channel-set stones. Otherwise the stones share prongs so resizing or adjusting after losing a stone increases the chances of losing another stone.

A good solution is you want a colored stone is to get a sapphire in the desired color. I have a green sapphire and people always think its an emerald anyways 🤷🏾‍♀️

I have had my emerald engagement ring for 30 years. Other than not wearing it on the beach, or if using any abrasive products, I never take it off. that includes getting 3 kids in and out of car seats over the years. it still looks great.
