I Secretly Studied Jewelry Making to Create My Fiancé’s Dream Ring – A Journey of Love and Craftsmanship
Hello, wonderful community!
I’m thrilled to share a deeply personal journey that I embarked on in secret—one that led to the creation of my fiancé’s dream engagement ring. While engagement rings are often bought “off the shelf,” I decided to take a unique and meaningful route: I dove into the world of jewelry making!
The Spark of Inspiration
It all started when I overheard my fiancé talking about her dream ring—her ideal gem, cut, and even the sentiment behind the design. It touched my heart and ignited a fire within me to make that vision a reality. But how could I do that? Without any prior knowledge of jewelry making, I realized I had quite the challenge ahead of me!
The Learning Curve
I enrolled in a local jewelry-making class under the guise of a hobbyist. For months, I dedicated my evenings to learning about gemology, different metal types, and the artistry involved in crafting a ring. I spent countless hours researching diamond cuts, settings, and styles to ensure I was capturing her dreams accurately. Who knew that the world of sapphires, moissanite, and even emeralds could be so intricate?
I learned about:
- Gem Cuts: Understanding the brilliance of cuts like round, princess, and cushion.
- Settings: Exploring solitaire, halo, and three-stone settings to reflect her personality.
- Metals: Weighing the pros and cons of platinum vs. white gold vs. rose gold.
The Big Reveal
After weeks spent sketching designs, choosing materials, and crafting the ring, I was finally ready for the big moment. I can’t describe the mix of nervousness and excitement as I planned the proposal. When the day arrived, everything felt surreal. I presented her with the ring I had poured my heart—and many late nights—into.
Her eyes sparkled brighter than the ring itself! The joy of seeing her reaction made every minute spent learning worthwhile.

If they want a baby, will he become an obgyn?!
Congratulations! I’m so impressed! Where did you find resources to learn where to start? I would also like to get into jewelry making and gold smithing
This is so impressive, and the ring is so unique and beautiful! Congratulations!! Did your fiancée start to wonder why you had talked about engagement/she sketched her dream ring, and then no proposal happened for the next two years while you secretly honed your craft?
Also, will you be making a wedding band to go with her engagement ring, or a wedding band for yourself? What a fun and useful hobby!
Would you be willing to share any videos or resources? I’m pretty sure the wedding band my FH wants doesn’t exist, and as a fine artist, it’d be fun and rewarding to learn to make one myself… time allowing. 🙂
Jeez, people like you still exist????? Ugh
That ring is gorgeous you did an amazing job! My partner is also trying to do this, has the equipment but still in the computer design phase. Anything in particular you wish you had known before you started the actual process to make it more streamlined or to avoid silly mistakes?
Utterly gorgeous!! I really like the setting you’ve created, and I know from experience how long it would have taken to get it just right. The picture with all the binding wire holding it in place made me smile.
How terrified were you when setting that diamond?!
An excellent representation of “if he wanted to, he would.”
I wish I could reply to every post in /r/waiting_to_wed with a link to this post.

YOU ARE AMAZING! This put a smile on my face! This is the type of partners we need in this world!
Chills, literally chills. This is the dream, what a lucky lady. I hope you both treasure each other like this forever.
Wow!! Absolutely amazing craftsmanship, and such a gorgeous design!! Congratulations🥂🤍
Wow! Mad respect to you. Before reading the description I was just going to ask whether it’s unplated white gold by any chance.
I ordered mine in unplated 14k palladium white gold and although there are some photos on the internet, it’s a relatively rare choice and I’m anxious to get it and see what is it going to look like “in person”. Coincidentally I’m having a lozenge stone as well, although mine is a sapphire and set in east west.
That is so impressive! did you buy all the equipment as well?
This is so cool! She’s gonna be bragging about you for the rest of your lives.
Now THIS is the dedication we need! I applaud you for making an already sentimental gesture that much more special. And now you have an extra craft for future projects. So cool!
That’s so cute!!! What a lucky lady 🙂
