If Money is a Concern: Navigating the World of Engagement Rings
Engagement rings are a significant investment—both emotionally and financially. With prices that can range from modest to extravagant, many of us face the age-old question: How much should you spend? This article aims to open up the discussion around not just the financial aspects of engagement rings but also what they represent in one’s love story.
The Emotional Value of an Engagement Ring
Before diving into financial considerations, let’s acknowledge the emotional weight these rings carry. An engagement ring symbolizes commitment, love, and the promise of a future together. The thought and sentiment behind choosing the right ring can be far more meaningful than its price tag.
Balancing Budget and Desire
When discussing if money is a concern, it’s essential to recognize that ‘affordable’ is different for everyone. Here are a few points to consider:
-
Set a Budget: Establish what feels comfortable for you—even before you start shopping. Setting a budget can help prevent overspending and could open the discussion about alternative options.
-
The 3-Month Rule: A common rule of thumb suggests spending about three months’ salary on an engagement ring. However, this isn’t a universal standard and may not apply to everyone. Let’s talk about what a reasonable figure looks like in today’s economy.
Exploring Alternatives
While diamonds are traditionally the go-to choice for engagement rings, there are plenty of beautiful alternatives. Here are some options to consider if you’re looking to save money:
-
Lab-Created Diamonds: These stunning stones are chemically identical to mined diamonds but often come at a fraction of the cost.
-
Gemstones: Consider sapphires, emeralds, or even morganite. They not only stand out but can also save you a significant amount on your ring.
-
Vintage or Second-Hand Rings: Explore vintage shops or online marketplaces for unique finds that hold character and history.
The Importance of Understanding Gems, Cuts, and Settings
Knowledge is power—especially when it comes to making an informed purchase.Understanding the different elements of engagement rings can offer insights into how to make your money go further:
-
Cuts: The cut of the stone influences not only its sparkle but also its price. Round brilliant diamonds are typically more expensive than other cuts like princess or oval.
-
Settings: The type of setting you choose can dramatically affect the overall look and price of the ring. Intricate settings might increase the cost but can also make a simpler stone look more stunning.

Wait, rings with lab diamonds you liked were $30k???
This is gorgeous btw, and great advice!
Gorgeous piece! Do you mind sharing the specs on the ring/diamond?
where did you find small jewelers directly? maybe because i live in a big city, everyone’s pretty expensive haha
Would love to see a video of your old mine cut. Looks stunning!
This is an incredibly stunning ring. Vintage is my fave. Congratulations!!!🍾
CVB ID did my engagement ring too.
I e purchased from Alex before and it was a good experience
This ring is simply stunning! The details on the antique style setting are everything. Congratulations!
We also decided to work with a small local jeweller for my engagement ring and so far very happy with the process.
It’s truly beautiful. I love CvB’s work and have a couple of her pieces. Love your ring!!
That ring is just spectacular!
The setting is so delicate. It looks vintage but still really personal.
Even if money isn’t a concern, lab diamonds look exactly the same as mined diamonds! My ring from 20 years ago is a mined diamond but I’ll definitely go for lab for my upgrade
You just made me love a six prong setting- something I absolutely never thought id like. The detail on those prongs is unbelievably gorgeous! This is like Top 10 rings on Reddit for me and I’ve been a daily stalker on multiple jewelry subs for years!
This is stunning – the detail on the setting is unreal. Love that you were smart and sentimental about it.
OMG!!!! This ring is so beautiful! I’m in love😍
Yeah shoutout to local jewelers fr. I had a couple issues with my local jeweler but none of them had anything to do with the quality of the jewelry itself or the process of selecting it. My fiance’s ring was about $1500 (including a custom engraving in my handwriting) and mine was estimated around $3-4k (I think, he wouldn’t actually tell me so the estimate is from when we went shopping last year). I’m sure it would have been far more expensive at other places, and I feel lucky that we have such a great small business jeweler near us.
It’s divine! Her detail work is sooooo good
This. Is. STUNNING!!!! 😍
Caysie’s work is absolutely breathtaking!
