Is It Normal to See the Prongs? A Dive into Engagement Ring Settings
Engagement rings are more than just a symbol of love; they are a reflection of personal style, taste, and even the stories behind them. When it comes to setting and showcasing those dazzling gems, one question often arises: Is it normal to see the prongs on your engagement ring?
Understanding Prongs
Prongs are the little metal claws that hold your gemstone in place, protecting it while also allowing light to enter from multiple angles. Their primary function is security, but they also play a crucial role in the overall aesthetic of the ring.
Aesthetic Appeal vs. Practicality
While some people love the look of visible prongs, others find them less appealing. Here are a few points to consider:
-
Visibility and Style: Some settings, like solitaire styles, make prongs a prominent feature of the design. In contrast, tension settings or bezel settings can hide them altogether. Which style resonates more with you and your vision for an engagement ring?
-
Customization: If you’re involved in selecting a ring, think about how visible you want the prongs to be. It’s a chance to customize your ring to reflect your personality!
-
Maintenance: Prongs can bend or become loose over time, requiring maintenance to keep your gemstone secure. Seeing the prongs may remind you to regularly check their condition and ensure your ring stays safe.
Community Insights: Show Us Your Rings!
To spark this discussion, let’s share our own experiences! Show off your engagement rings and tell us:
- How visible are the prongs on your ring?
- Did you have a say on the prong style when choosing or designing your ring?
- Have you had any experiences with prong maintenance that you’d like to share?
Don’t forget to include pictures of your beautiful rings! Whether you love the visible prongs or prefer them less noticeable, sharing your unique ring can inspire others and create a richer conversation about engagement ring styles and choices.
Learning Together
As we explore this topic, we encourage everyone to ask questions and share knowledge about gems, cuts, and settings. In a community where we celebrate love, let’s also celebrate the variety of ways we present that love through our engagement rings.
So, what are your thoughts? Is it all right to see the prongs? Let’s get the conversation flowing!

I feel like the stone isn’t clean enough to truly assess what you’re asking here. However, if what you’re seeing bothers you tell the jeweler. It doesn’t matter if we think you’re justified or not, it matters what you think.
The ring is not the issue, the diamond is. Its the cut and this is called windowing… I would get a refund considering the ring has also already lost a halo diamond.
I’m not super familiar with elongated cushions- is this a typical pattern of the cut? Or is this unusual?
it is if u choose large prongs such as urs. you may have wanted petite.
I have a 1.65 carat D Color IF lab center stone and it doesn’t look like that. It’s a marquise cut but I’ve never seen a cushion cut radiant that you could see through like that. I would try to exchange it. I can understand why that bothers you.
It looks off. None of mine look like that
I’ve never heard of prongs creating an “X” on a diamond, to me it looks like it’s just how the diamond is cut, maybe some kind of hybrid modified brilliant (it has the crushed ice facet appearance and then the larger facets which create the “X”). However, it looks poorly cut unfortunately, which is why the “X” is very prominent. Windowing can look nice if it adds some good contrast but when it’s too noticeable it can create some large flat zones where it’s not going to be very sparkly in certain lighting, particularly because it’s such a big diamond the x is very prominent.
It’s normal for fancy cuts like cushions to have windowing but well cut diamonds minimize the windowing so that it’s only really be visible when viewing the diamond from an angle, never from a straight on view . For cushions specifically (and for modified brilliant cushions which yours seems to be some kind of hybrid of) acceptable windowing would be if you look at the diamond from a normal angle and not more than 1/4 of the table is windowing.
Can you possibly return it and exchange the center stone?
If you don’t like the prongs what you can ask for is either a rounded classic prong or to have smaller prongs. Other than that I don’t see an issue. The X shape looks like it’s the way it was cut which is why it’s showing like that
It’s huge! Wouldn’t prongs be normal? It also looks like glass – but I can’t figure out exactly why. I don’t really understand the lab vs natural diamond thing
I understand your concern as you want it to be perfect! But honestly I think it looks fabulous and so gorgeous
I’m literally no expert but when I’ve seen rings with a halo, I’ve never noticed the prongs but I noticed yours right away. It’s almost like they are part of the halo and that’s why it’s throwing me off??
The halo diamonds look whiter to me which I can’t figure because you’re saying the center is D.
It looks very clear, almost you can see straight through
Tell the jeweler you do t like the look of the prongs
I’m super interested why you have a silver engagement ring but your other rings are gold?
I’m not an expert, but that diamond is huge… lab or not. The first photo I can see what you are saying about the X, but with a diamond that big and that clarity is just going to show through. The second photo the X is actually from the cut. I think it looks great! But if you don’t like it you will have to get a different cut with a much smaller base (side touching the setting). Or… you could get a less clear diamond…
Is there a diamond missing from the halo or I seeing things
The cross is in the cushion cuts pavilion angles. Nothing to do with prongs from experience
Sadly pretty common with those massive labs, and somewhat to be expected at the current price points.
We see a lot of subpar ones on this forum with similar issues, I’d be extremely unhappy with this.
I don’t think I would be happy with this diamond. I’m not an expert on any of this but to me it seems like there’s significant windowing because I can definitely see the shape of the metal in the prong on the bottom half of the second picture. I’m not familiar enough with the cut to say if that’s typical of this shape but it’s something that would drive me crazy
Something definitely looks off about the Diamond, especially with it being a VVS2.
