Does Anyone Regret Their Colored Stone Engagement Ring?
Engagement rings are more than just pieces of jewelry; they each carry a unique story, emotion, and personal taste. Traditionally, the diamond has been the centerpiece of engagement rings, but in recent years, colored stones have surged in popularity. From stunning sapphires to vibrant emeralds, these colorful gems often offer a more personalized touch. But as the trend grows, a question arises: Does anyone regret their colored stone?
Embracing Individuality
Colored stones come with the allure of individuality. Many brides-to-be are drawn to their rich hues and distinctiveness, making a bold statement in a sea of traditional diamond rings. They symbolize not just love, but personality, creativity, and uniqueness. A sapphire might reflect the deep blue of the ocean, while a ruby can echo the fiery passion of love itself.
Moreover, choosing a colored stone can often feel more intimate, suggesting that the ring—and the love it represents—is truly one-of-a-kind.
A Matter of Preference
However, as much as colored stones enchant, some individuals regret their choices after the initial excitement wears off. This may stem from various factors:
-
Style Evolution: Tastes can change over time. What felt perfect during the engagement may not fit the wearer’s evolving aesthetic down the road.
-
Social Perception: Some might feel pressure from societal norms or family opinions, leading to feelings of regret over their unconventional choice.
-
Durability Concerns: While many colored stones are hardy, some are softer than diamonds and can be more prone to scratches or damage. This raises questions about practicality versus beauty.
The Conversation Starter
Instead of viewing these regrets as failures, they can serve as conversation starters in our community. Sharing these experiences can help others navigate their engagement ring choices with more clarity. Here are a few prompts for discussion:
- Did you consider a colored stone as a potential engagement ring? What influenced your decision?
- If you own a colored stone, do you ever wish you had chosen differently, or do you embrace it fully?
- What unique qualities (cuts, settings) have you discovered that elevate the beauty of colored stones?
- For anyone who made the switch back to a diamond—what prompted your change of heart?

Although i’m not engaged yet my promise ring is a dark blue almost black stone and I love it!!! it’s just what I wanted and I’m going for a colored stone for my engagement ring too!! it’s unique and perfect!
I’ve had mine now for only a month, but I love her more and more each day! The only thing I will say is that I baby her more than I did to my diamond ring (previous engagement). But it’s worth it!
Also- wow- I love that ring so much!
I have an Oore ring with a Montana sapphire and never once regret it! Almost 3 years in and I still love it and admire it all the time.

Initially I wanted a sapphire, was worried I would regret it, so I got the diamond. Regretted the diamond, bought a sapphire 7 years. Watching the different shades of blue flash is just so much more interesting.

I have a yellow sapphire that brings me so much joy every time I look at it!

I have colored accent stones, I like that it’s different and that I’m unlikely to run into someone with the same ring I have.
Not at all! I have a light green sapphire and I’m obsessed ❤️
Alexandrite goes with everything since they change color, you can’t lose! I haven’t regretted it for a second

I have a triple-stone sapphire as my backup ring. I absolutely love it and wear it far more frequently than my diamond!
I would never. This is all I want! I have a similar lab alexandrite at home and it would look great with this bit of rose kind of gold. Buy it! Who cares about if someone finds it less traditional.
Absolutely not. I’d regret it if I didn’t get one in the first place. I’ve always wanted a Sapphire engagement ring. Would absolutely be on me if I didn’t voice my preferences and my husband purposed with a diamond ring instead
I love pink. When my husband was looking for my engagement ring over 23 years ago, he looked for a ring with a pink sapphire, but they were way out of his price range, so he got me a small diamond solitaire. Everyone said that was ok, because pink sapphires don’t really say “engagement ring” and that I would’ve gotten tired of it.
20 years in to our marriage, I’m still not tired of pink haha. So my husband got me a pink padparadscha sapphire, and we had it set into a ring with natural diamonds from my grandmother’s wedding band. I will never get tired of it!

Your ring is beautiful! I’ve only had mine since May, but zero regrets. Green sapphire

I have a tanzanite and I was a bit worried. I adore it. In certain lights it changes shade and is absolutely beautiful.

I love my Montana Sapphire! It feels so personal, and you’ll never regret having something that feels so authentic and interesting to you!
I had the option to get a lab diamond or a teal sapphire. I chose the teal Madagascar sapphire even though it was more expensive than the diamond because I want something with more depth and dimension and I like color. My wedding band will have a few tiny natural diamonds flush set along with some tiny Montana sapphires. I’m not sure of the Mohs hardness scale for alexandrite. Sapphire is 9; diamonds are 10. I’m a tiiiny bit concerned about my sapphire getting scratched but I’ll just have to take it off when I’m working bc I have a very physical job. You could always save up for a lab ring in the same style and wear them both on different days 🙂

I absolutely love my lab blue colored diamond, no regrets at all 🙂

No regrets! I think all rings are beautiful no matter what stone they have but my teal sapphire is just perfect for me! It changed colour depending on the lighting and it matches all my outfits.
Just got engaged this October and it was so special I have a think is a pink tourmaline with white sapphire. I love it it’s special and screams princess… a few haters a long the way but if I’m happpy that’s what matters. Yours is so beautiful so be proud

nope 😍
I have a salt & pepper diamond. It annoyed me a tad while engaged because I think people didn’t register that I was engaged, but in the end I guess it doesn’t really matter. I love my ring and I’m happy with my choice though it’s a different color stone!

Zero regrets. We also went with alexandrite because we didn’t want diamonds. It’s my birthstone and his name, so it just added to some extra meaning to the ring. I love that it’s just a little bit different!

I have a brown sapphire and no regrets at all – a diamond just wouldn’t feel like me.
Nope, not even a little! Granted, I’ve had it for less than a year. But I have always known I’d want a colorful stone. I have a color-changing alexandrite and I love it so much!

Nope. Very happy with mine.
Just got engaged with an Oore ring with a parti sapphire! It’s only been a few weeks but I absolutely do not see myself regretting this.

Not once in the 4 years since I got engaged have I regretted getting a colored stone!

No I love my ring
I experienced the opposite! I have a beautiful diamond ring and almost 5 years later, just got a new colored set. I wanted a garnet ring because it’s the birthstone of my two sons and husband. It feels so incredibly special and makes me smile every time I see it. 💗
https://preview.redd.it/xwgr0yywuqzf1.png?width=1953&format=png&auto=webp&s=40b3d4082c3b2cfaa4d2686ef4706878a1be60d1
No, I always was interested in alternative stones since I thought diamonds were boring. I did want a ring with some accent diamonds on the sides though, since I’ve never liked the Solitaire rings. I got an Alexandrite ring and it’s gorgeous. It looks purple in direct sunlight, teal in indirect/shade, red under dim interior lighting, sometimes blackish, and I’ve even seen it look pink in reflections. I also was worried I’d regret my choice and want a diamond ring since they look more “bridal” but I’m so glad I got the ring I did.

I don’t! As a matter of fact, I wish my sapphire was stronger in pink but t I still love her!!

I love my green sapphire! Green is a very significant color in my marriage so it makes me think of my husband every time I see it 🙂
I have never once regretted my vintage emerald.

Never. My spouse proposed with a precision cut hexagon shaped natural unheated padparascha.
I would say diamonds only became more “traditional” due to the highly successful marketing of DeBeers. If you look at people like Princess Diana, Duchess Catherine Middleton, and Princess Eugenie, their engagement rings aren’t diamonds. Colored gemstones have been used as engagement rings for a long time too
My engagement ring is a ruby from Oore, and i LOVE it. I get so many compliments on it, the most common one being, “that is so you✨”.
I have zero regrets!

It looks like Alexandrite. I actual wanted sandstone initially. But it’s too soft. I thibk color is more unique and makes you stand out for you as a person. Totally not against normal Diamond color, but when you see so many of them idk. I opted for a simple gray color for my son or stone, and while I wanted another color I didn’t want to overdo it and I’m so happy.

No regrets! It still feels way more interesting than a diamond and I love how the color changes in different light.
I always wanted a dark stone. Btw I had no hand on picking this out. My husband is just that good. He chose everything here.
https://preview.redd.it/9a92q6o9drzf1.jpeg?width=1351&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9ad4f50f4f13686f86cd722f2ef4faa2277dc168
I LOVE my alexandrite! I got it because it’s a sentimental stone for me; my grandmother had an alexandrite ring that I remember her wearing when I was little. I always told her I wanted her to will it to me, but it was lost when her house flooded in Katrina. I don’t wear my rings most days (outdoor job, so I wear a silicone band), but when I do I can’t stop staring at it. I love the way the color changes.

My fiancée proposed with my slightly pink rose cut rustic diamond in a rose gold setting. I spend most of my time watching it glitter from a clear champagne to a pink to a pale purple, I’m obsessed. If you look closely and in the right light you can see a small galaxy of inclusions and some deep orange iron deposits that really add some depth!
No ragrets here, as the youngsters say! I love my beautiful pink sapphire, but I’ve always loved pink ever since I was tiny. Maybe if I’d chosen a colour I didn’t feel so strongly about, I’d have changed my mind over time, I don’t know.
I wore a lot of pinks, creams and pastels already but having a ring this colour does encourage me to wear more as they look so nice with it. So maybe you’ll find yourself wearing more lavender, blue and purple, if that impacts your decision at all!
