I actually kind of love the new setting and it’s impressive how it was reinvented—but the original was stunning so why oh why was it at the cost of an heirloom?? That’s too steep. I’m so sorry.
So, from reading your posts, I think I’m getting an idea of what happened. When the ring was taken in to be sized, it was cleaned. Upon inspection after cleaning, the jeweler has noticed some worn prongs, which can be seen in the photo of the original ring. The jeweler would most likely have recommended that the head be replaced, due to the prongs having been retipped before and no longer securing the stone, as evident in your photo. Due to the age of the stone and perhaps the condition, it may have been suggested that the center stone be set in a bezel, as this offers the best protection. How the rest of the ring came about, I have no idea! That might be something to discuss with your partner!
I like the new setting way better IF it was done correctly and perfectly! They need to fix it no charge. I kind of doubt you will be able to put it back the way it was, unless they still have the semi mount. But, I’m sure they have something similar.
Another option would be to sell it, and start fresh!

No I’m sorry but it was much better before. The new setting gets zero light through the stones, I can’t even imagine how hard it would be to keep clean and they look a little crooked. You really have to tell him how you feel. You said yes to the before ring, remind him of that. Maybe you can design something together that reflect you both. Also DO NOT go back to that jeweler.
I am so sorry, this looks like a completely different ring. Did the jewler switch out the center stone as well? The change is that dramatic to me.

Why would he get it adjusted to how HE wanted? That alone would upset me.
The second version looks fine, but it’s not nearly as good as the ring prior to the change … Why would he destroy a ring you were in love with? This is diabolical. Good news: The jeweler may still have the old mount lying around in their shop. Perhaps you can have it returned to its former glory. How sad.
I personally don’t like a diamond in a bezel setting, or any faceted stone, just my preference, as it cuts the light out. Your ring is a prime example. The before is much nicer, again. My opinion. Curious, why did your partner go without you to change it? Family ring passed down maybe?
Return to the jeweller and tell him to fix it or you’ll sue. It does look bad compared to the original. You did not give them permission to alter your ring. I’m sure the jeweller’s envelope says ring size and nothing more. Also, keep a copy of the photos for yourself, but bring in a copy of the photos so they can see the change themselves. I’d be livid.
I’m so sorry this has happened, did you say to yr fiancé that the ring “only” needs resizing? Or did he decide to reshape both the“side stones” & main stone to a full bezel styling” & remove the “baguette stones”? Or did the jeweller “make the decision with yr fiancé? I do like bezel stones as they are more secure, but if this is NOT yr preference please, please explain/ask yr fiancé why the decision was made to alter such a sentimental ring when he knew you adored it’s original setting. It is obviously completely up to you. But honestly I don’t feel like this new setting plays to the strengths of the diamonds. The bezel is so heavy looking on this ring. And where did the little baguettes go!?! I’m sorry this situation stinks ☹️. Best wishes to you that the situation resolves.

I dislike the original. It’s possible because it was super dirty, but I think it is a dated design.
Sure, there are improvements to the second design, but as a woman who has never had a husband who wanted to surprise me with anything, I would give up a body part to have a guy try so hard to do something so nice to surprise me.
Personally i think it looks a lot better. But im not the one wearing it. And im biased bc i have a bezel and love the metal look. You can get it reset to something you love tho, id be annoyed my partner messed with my ring
What am I missing here? He took it to be resized but redesigned it instead …. and without your input? I don’t think the redone ring looks bad but I like the original better and looks like you do too. Be honest with him and tell him how you feel.
I actually think the ring is beautiful how it looks with the bezel setting and more sleek look to the accent stones. I feel like the second ring lets the solitaire stand out more. Are there imperfections? Yes. Overall the second ring is still very beautiful.

This is an ugly no offense it was beautiful before and they butchered it. Plus where did the other stones that they did not add back in???? I would be raising hell it was a gorgeous ring before but I also hate bezel settings personally.

I don’t know where you’re located, but there’s an amazing jeweler in Portland, OR who used to work for an antique jewelry store but now has his own goldsmith business. His designs are sturdy and fucking gorgeous, and I’m positive he could redo this for you so it won’t break your heart. (He’s made a ring for my wife and repaired some of my antique jewelry, and I definitely trust him.

Normally I wouldn’t comment on this. I’m not a fan of bezel settings, although I have seen a few beautiful bezels on here. If my dislike is just due to my personal preference, I keep it to myself. In this case, it’s not the bezel that makes me shocked about this one, it’s that it looks so poorly done. I think the original was gorgeous.
It wasn’t resized, it was remade. Who asked for that?.
I think the bezel design could work, but it looks asymmetrical in the bottom right photo. And for the center stone I personally prefer when the bezel has a more open gallery.
No way in the world could I keep quiet, and this is the piece that I have to wear and look at EVERYDAY. While I appreciate him trying to do something nice, weddings sets are serious business and very sentimental to the wearer. I would let him know I don’t like it and try to get it reset as close as possible to the original setting or else in something you absolutely love. I do see the imperfections in the bezel set, and that would drive me crazy! This is an opportunity to teach him what you like and don’t like, which could potentially help future gift-giving. I don’t think he’ll be upset about your feedback.
