Finally Received My Ring but Noticed a Possible Issue with the Bezel: Am I Being Picky?
Hey everyone! I just wanted to share my excitement (and a bit of concern) about finally receiving my engagement ring, and I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences.
First off, let me just say how thrilled I was when the package finally arrived! After weeks of anticipation, I couldn’t wait to slip that beauty on my finger. But as I inspected the ring more closely, I noticed something that made me pause—possible issues with the bezel setting.
What I Noticed
The bezel, which is supposed to securely hold my lovely stone in place, has what appears to be a slight unevenness on one side. At first glance, it looks stunning, but upon closer inspection, I feel a twinge of doubt. Is this a fault in craftsmanship, or am I being overly critical?
The Dilemma: Am I Being Picky?
Now, I’m grappling with whether to address this issue or let it slide. Here are some thoughts I’ve been mulling over:
-
Expectations vs. Reality: Is it natural for a handmade piece to have some minor imperfections? After all, no piece is perfect, right?
-
Big Decision: If I decide to bring it up with the jeweler, could I risk coming off as ungrateful? They did put a lot of love into crafting this ring, after all.
-
Longevity: How crucial is it to address potential issues now to avoid future problems? I wouldn’t want my stone to become loose over time!
Let’s Talk About It!
I know many of you have either received your engagement rings or have been on the hunt for the perfect one, so I’m opening the floor to discussion:
-
Past Experiences: Have any of you encountered similar concerns with your rings? How did you handle it?
-
Advice for Future Purchases: What tips do you have for ensuring quality in craftsmanship? What should I look out for when inspecting a ring?
-
Feeling Right About It: How do you assess if you’re being too picky or if your concerns are valid?

Let’s spark some meaningful conversations about our most cherished pieces!

From everything you’ve described, this is a custom setting being made for your stone. What you were sent does not match the drawing so definitely needs a redo.
Did you get the stone from the same jeweler or is this person just doing the setting? I am not a very trusting person overall in this space and would be concerned about whether the jeweler tried to use some type of premade setting instead of fully custom, and question how a jeweler would not see these differences. I would have a telephone conversation (I know, ugh) first and confirm by email to make sure nothing is being misunderstood about what you want.
I also would take the ring somewhere after you get it back to make it absolutely certain you have your correct stone back, especially if it didn’t come from this jeweler.
If you don’t mind me asking where did you gave this ring made?
If your CAD on the 4th picture is what you agreed on, then it’s definitely not the right shape and you should ask for what you wanted
I knew the problem before I read the post, the bezel is too round! Not like the design. Be picky.
i noticed that before i even read your post or saw the photo of what you wanted. I’d fix it.
Send it back! (I hardly ever say that, tbf) You ordered a rectangular octagon. You got an oval.
I am awaiting a custom bezel set elongated radiant with a split shank. The reason I settled on my design was the strong, sharp angles that highlighted the shape of my stone in the best way possible. If you had wanted a more rounded look, that’s what you would have chosen. Absolutely send it back so that you can get what was expected. (As an aside, it is beautiful. But, that’s not the point. Getting what you requested and paid for is the point.) Good luck!
I’d send it back. I also proposed with an emerald cut in a bezel setting and the bezel has the corners that match the emerald cut and it looks amazing (in me and my wife’s very biased opinion)
Send it back
It looks like they over-polished it, which took away the definition in the corners. We’ve had this same issue with my husbands wedding band multiple times, the person doing the final finishing went crazy on a polishing wheel and took out a lot of the texture and character of the corners. When you send it back, be very specific that you want the bezel to retain the geometric angles and the person polishing it at the end needs to be aware of this criteria.
Update: I’m going to send it back after I propose. I’m proposing a on a trip a week from Friday and leaving for that trip a week from tomorrow so that’s way too tight for turnaround time. Thank you to all who affirmed my suspicions!
Also, if anyone wants even better reference: [here](https://reddit.com/r/EngagementRings/comments/1la6zxu/my_ring_finally_came_in/) is another post with the exact same ring design. This is what it’s supposed to be like.

First off that ring is stunning. But I see what you mean. Here’s my emerald cut bezel and you can see the corners are slightly angled. I would say if you prefer the angles def send it back and get it fixed now.
What a STUNNING design.
As others have said, you can’t be too picky with something to be worn forever.
The edges of the bezel are SO uneven! Especially the one in the top right corner. I can’t stop looking at it. Definitely not too picky. Good luck and I hope they can give you what they showed in the CAD. It’s a beautiful stone and design
the bezel is not only rounded but weirdly uneven? sometimes bezels look like that around an uneven stone but an emerald cut I would assume to be very even.

My ring is horizontal version of yours and I would be distraught if it looked that round. I greatly enjoy the sophistication the sharper lines and angles it lends my ring. I would send it back and make them match the CAD.
It’s a big difference between the mock up and the piece. You aren’t being unreasonable.
Definitely not picky, it’s not what you asked for and that’s something to be upset about for sure. FWIW I think it’s gorgeous! The smoothed bezel adds some additional visual interest in contrast to the emerald cut. But you should def consider sending it back if you like the emerald bezel better. Regardless, you picked a beautiful design, the gold looks so good with the emerald!
You need to get your CAD. that’s what you wanted and you should get that.
I kinda like it but it’s not what you thought you were getting, they need to fix it.
Agreed! The CAD doesn’t match the final product and I’d return it. Definitely prefer the angular CAD.
I prefer the CAD.. I’d send it back..
I think having a fully rectangular bezel would look kind of silly and boxy. This looks more thought out and elegant, IMO.
You can’t be too picky. You’re going to wear this everyday and for your whole life. Also you deserve to get what you paid for which is the design on the last. At first I didn’t see your point til I saw the original design and must agree, the actual takes away from the shape.
I agree with you and thought this was an OMC when I first saw it because of the rounded corners.
The bezel is smooth and rounded, definitely taking away from the emerald shape.
