The Heartfelt Choice: A Mother’s Ring in My Engagement
Hey, beautiful ring community! 💍
I’m beyond excited to share a moment that’s filled me with love and nostalgia. Recently, my partner proposed with a stunning ring that holds a special piece of my heart: my mother’s ring. It’s a ring I’ve always adored, not just for its breathtaking design but also for the memories and emotions it encapsulates.
The Significance of a Mother’s Ring
When my partner chose to reference my mother’s ring, it felt like they were honoring my roots, my family, and the woman who’s shaped so much of who I am. Rings, especially those passed down from generation to generation, carry stories that go beyond their sparkling beauty. They can symbolize enduring love, legacy, and the values we cherish.
Sharing the Ring
Here’s a peek at the ring that’s now a part of my life’s journey:
Isn’t it stunning? The combination of the intricate design and the sentimental value just takes my breath away!

I can’t see my post explanation so re-typed this… but maybe it is there? IDK, i’m bad at reddit.
Mom’s on top, mine on botttom.
Though I gave my partner general preferences (gold; elongated stones; *if* a gemstone, an emerald but I like diamonds too), it was all him choosing to go for sentimentality – made even lovelier to find out that his choice also references my father, who designed my mom’s ring on his own. And on top of that, *even more sentimental* when my mom and dad shared that my mom actually cracked her first emerald (an early lesson in emerald care for me!), and my dad has a signet ring inset with part of her original stone. So we all have emeralds!
My partner worked with HerRock Jewelry, based in New York though he worked virtually from abroad with them. He recommends them highly, especially if you’re open to lab diamonds which they promote. They do custom work, as well as more “off the rack” designs, though everything is hand made to each individual stone. We will be returning to William and Bree for our wedding bands.
**Specs for reference:** main stone is a 2.89ct Zambian emerald cut emerald, 9.4 x 6.5 mm; side stones are brilliant cut trapezoid lab diamonds, combined total weight of 0.51cts. Ring and center stone double prongs are 14k yellow gold, with platinum prongs and general setting support. Size 5.75, though I think I’m actually a 5.5 in the end.
*N.B. We are aware the shank is quite slender at just 1.5mm,* but it was a look I liked and the setting is otherwise quite robust; the final, specific shank spec was chosen by the jeweler who my partner trusted. We had also discussed the downside of emeralds before he chose to go that direction – how soft a stone it is – and agreed that even apart from its less-than-ideal qualities for everyday wear-and-tear, since I’m quite active anyways, long-term my daily ring will likely just be a silicone ring even if we had gone with a diamond. Thus, he decided it was perfectly acceptable to approach this as a specialty/occasion ring… Though now I have it on my hand, I’m so in love I want a replica to wear all the time! Long-term, we will likely have my wedding band (simple gold) welded to the ring as my mom had done.
