Maybe You Guys Can Help Me Make Some Sense of This Ring…
Hello, fellow ring enthusiasts!
I recently got engaged, and while I am absolutely over the moon about it, there’s one element of my engagement ring that’s leaving me a bit puzzled. I thought it would be the perfect thing to discuss in our community since we all have a shared passion for these stunning symbols of love. So, without further ado, let me show off my ring and hopefully, you can help me make sense of a few details!
Here’s My Ring: A Dazzling Diamond Solitary
(Insert picture of the ring here)
Isn’t it beautiful? Featuring a brilliant-cut diamond set in a classic four-prong setting, it’s everything I dreamed of—except… there’s a bit of mystery surrounding it. Here’s what I know:
-
The Diamond: I’m told it’s an excellent grade, but how do I really know if it’s a true “excellent” cut? What does ‘cut’ even mean in terms of sparkle and quality?
-
The Metal: The band is 14k white gold, but I’ve seen others in platinum and yellow gold. What are the pros and cons of each metal, and how do I maintain them?
-
Size Speculation: I believe it’s a 1.5-carat diamond, but I’ve encountered rings that look bigger and I’m curious about how to gauge the size perception based on the setting.
I’d love to hear your thoughts! Have you experienced similar uncertainties with your own rings? Here are some prompts for discussion:
Discussion Prompts:
-
Cut Clarity: What are the differences between various cuts, and how do they affect the ring’s overall brilliance? Any tips for identifying a high-quality cut in a diamond?
-
Metal Matters: What’s your favorite type of ring metal and why? Do you have any maintenance tips for anyone who might be conflicted between different options?
-
Size Perception: What tricks have you learned to make a diamond appear larger? Are there specific settings or stones you recommend?
-
Emotional Value vs. Resale Value: How do you balance the sentimental aspects of your ring with its market value? Any stories of rings you cherish for non-monetary reasons?
Let’s all share our opinions, experiences, and maybe even some photos of our own engagement rings! I’m eager to learn from this community and shine a little more light (pun intended) on my own piece.
Thanks in advance for your help, and I can’t wait to see your beautiful rings and hear your insights!
Happy discussing! 💍✨
Feel free to jump in, share your expertise, and let’s make this a vibrant conversation about the rings that mean so much to all of us!

I’d get it polished up and cleaned at a jewelers and then sized for your right hand. If there’s no bad juju and you loved the style, I think it would be a great righty ring.
I think it’s gorgeous and would personally wear it myself, and I am a 24F who is not into Star Trek lmao! I do have a taste for vintage jewelry tho. However, I think there are plenty of younger artsy folks, especially in places like NYC, who would leap at a ring like this
How much would you sell it for? It’s very pretty!
This is giving me 80s vibe.
My first engagement ring was very similar to this but without any side stones. I also got it in 2008. I split with my ex and I sold it at a pawn shop in 2021. For the engagement ring and the wedding band together I got $1,000. It was worth it to me because my ex was awful and I just wanted it out of my house
What about recycling it into a different piece of jewellery? Take the center stone out and have if made into a pendant – and the smaller stones into an infinity band. If you reset them in yellow gold or rose gold they will look completely different to your engagement ring.
I love it I would wear it. I just prefer yellow gold and don’t wear silver or white anymore.
You could sell it, everyone has different taste and someone would love this even if you see it as outdated. You won’t get much for it though, I would keep it for sentiment’s sake unless you’re divorced and it holds bad memories. If you have kids, one might want the stone someday. Or turn the center stone into a pendant or a new ring or something!
Needs a clean but so pretty!!
The hold these styles of rings has on me is crazy. I love this!
If the ring was mine, I’d have it remade into other pieces (assuming it’s still meaningful to you). Maybe the center stone could be turned into a necklace and the baguettes into a bracelet? Check out spurjewelry on Instagram. They designed and crafted some new pieces out of my grandmother’s old jewelry for me.
What are the little balls on the inside of the band? 🤔 … also I’d have the stones used to make something else that you’ll enjoy wearing 🥰
It’s similar to my 1985 engagement ring but mine has round diamonds in the band and a tension setting for the main diamond.
It’s very unique and has a cool heirloom vibe but what matters most is if you like it or not!
I’d wear it stacked, it’s the perfect shape for it.
I’d wear this now. It’s kinda art deco like.
I mean, I’d wear it, I think it’s great!
I like it…has an art deco vibe.
Is pretty but niche someone that is looking for this kind of ring may be willing to pay se cash for it not 3k but maybe 1500. Sadly what they say about jewels being an appreciating asset ist nitch true
i think it’s beautiful! honestly i’ve been considering a similar shape/style, if you’re not in a pinch for the money you could hold onto it, styles are cyclical… may be worth more selling in a few years.
You could sell it but you would probably get very little for it. Id keep it for the sentiment
Deciding the fate of your ring depends on your personal connection to it. You could sell it, especially if you think it might bring joy to someone else, but consider getting a current appraisal first. Alternatively, repurposing the diamonds into a new piece of jewelry could allow you to enjoy them in a fresh way while maintaining their sentimental value. If the ring holds significant memories, keeping it as a keepsake is also a valid option. Ultimately, choose what feels right for you.
Why can’t you wear it?
It’s unique but not totally outdated. It’s even a bit unisex. I could see it being worn as a man’s pinky ring as well. You should try posting it on one of the buy/sell subs.
What if you got this reset?! Take a few of the stones out and make them into earrings and use the other stones in a new ring/necklace? 😊
I like the clean lines. I think it’s lovely
You can take it to a jeweler to get it assessed and decide from there what you want to do with it
There are jewelry buy sell trade subs on Reddit you can sell it in. If it doesn’t have bad feelings for you, I think it’d be great stacked!
I’m sorry if I missed this part, but why don’t you want to wear it anymore? I wasn’t sure if you are divorced or got a new ring…. But I think this ring might look nice stacked with some other rings, that is if it doesn’t have bad juju.
