Why Does My Engagement Ring Look So Odd? Let’s Talk About It!
Hey, everyone! 💍
I recently found myself staring at my engagement ring, and I couldn’t help but wonder: why does it look so…odd? 🤔 Maybe you’ve felt the same way, whether you just got engaged or you’ve had your ring for a while now. In a community dedicated to sharing our precious gems, I thought it would be a perfect topic for discussion!
1. Unique Designs Are In!
First off, let’s acknowledge the beauty of unique engagement rings. Have you noticed how non-traditional designs are gaining popularity? While some prefer classic solitaires, others are opting for vintage styles, unconventional cuts, or even alternative stones. This divergence from the traditional norm can sometimes lead us to feel our rings are “odd.” What do you think? Are you a fan of unique cuts like trapezoid or pear-shaped diamonds? Show us if you have one! ✨
2. Setting and Styling
Another factor that can create a sense of oddity is the setting. Have you ever looked at a ring with a prong setting and thought, “That just looks…different?” Sometimes, the excitement of finding a ring can lead us to unusual settings that we might not be accustomed to. Whether it’s a halo setting, side stone embellishments, or a modern bezel set, these design choices can alter the appearance significantly. I’d love to see pictures of your settings! Which ones do you think work best?
3. Gemstone Choices
Let’s talk about gemstones. While diamonds are the classic choice, many are stepping outside the box with colored sapphires, emeralds, or moissanites. These vibrant stones can certainly make a ring stand out in ways we might not expect. Does your ring have a non-diamond stone? How do you feel about it? Personally, I think colored stones bring a unique flair to an engagement ring—what about you?
4. The “Personal Touch” Factor
Every ring has a story. It might be the way the light hits the stone or how it reflects your personality and your partner’s love. Sometimes the odd look comes from the emotional significance it carries. What were the thought processes behind your choices? Did you prioritize a certain cut or setting style because of a special memory or tradition? Let’s dive into the stories behind our rings!
5. Tips to Embrace Your Unique Style
If you’re feeling uncertain about the uniqueness of your engagement ring, here are some tips to embrace its oddness:

Excited to see your incredible rings! 💖

You got a stone cut like a football and ask why it looks like a football? This ring is absolutely gorgeous. You’re fine. Stop over thinking it or get a new one.
I don’t think there is anything wrong with it. I wouldn’t have thought of an eye if you hadn’t mentioned it. It’s pretty!
FWIW I think all EW marquise look like eyeballs. I agree with others that you’re wearing your ring too close to your knuckle. And I think swapping your band closer to your knuckle would help elongate the look of your fingers.
It’s definitely unique, and it does remind me of an evil eye protection ring, which isn’t a bad thing. It’s cool and different!
I love it!
It’s the setting.
First, it’s a beautiful ring. I think the reason you think it looks odd now that you’re wearing it is because you have short, thicker fingers so the ring takes up too much real estate on the little bit you have. Thick, chunky bands tend to look better on long, slender fingers. I myself have sausage fingers so please don’t think I’m insulting you, we all have our unique hands! To make the ring look more pleasing to you, you could do a couple of things. First, take off the wedding band under it. It moves the ring too far towards the knuckle. A lot of people wear their wedding band on top or even on their right hand. Second, if you can, get your nails done in a longer style. Since I started doing my nails a bit longer and almond shaped I’ve had so many people compliment my hands, and long fingers! I have had sausages for fingers my whole life, but they look longer and more slender with the nails.
It looks like an eyeball bc you chose a cigar band.
Maybe because it’s horizontal instead of vertical
It doesn’t look odd to me. I think it’s lovely. I adore the thick band.
Looks like the Eye Of Horus!
Honestly I think it’s the width of the band. It makes it look more like an evil eye piece than an engagement ring imo.
I think the band need to be above it. The engagement closer to the heart
It’s only weird if you think it’s weird.
It does look like a football, you can change the direction of it or remove the bezel
Odd not really. To me the band is throwing off
This is stunning wish I was brave enough to have gone for something like this!!!!
For what it’s worth I have a strong dislike for eye motifs in jewellery and I think it’s a beautiful ring so it can’t be too eye like.
First thing I noticed is your ring doesn’t look at home. It looks awkward hovering so close to your knuckle.
The setting is not letting her shine. The entire girdle is covered blocking all the light. Does it go all the way down and completely conceal the cutlet?( bottom). It’s like they’re curtains all around it blocking the sun. I mean I actually feel like she’s being smothered. I can’t even see her facets. I feel like it’s a beautiful diamond that’s being covered up. Also, if you look in the R corner point there’s a gap-you shouldn’t be able to see where the bezel starts and stops. They should fix that. You’re seeing the eye because they outlined the eye for you. they wrapped the entire girdle. I think she’s just wearing the wrong clothes. I would consider a new setting somewhere down the line.
Looks like you have short fingers like me, it could be what’s causing an “odd” look. I too love chunky gold bands though. I just think because it’s so thick it looks high up toward the knuckle. I think some rings don’t need bands and this is one of them. I would take the band off so that the ring can sit more flush. I think this will make a big difference! It’s a gorgeous ring.
This is such a stunning set. Love it
It’s very pretty! If anything mimic the band on the other side to balance it. But it’s gorgeous!
It’s beautiful and unique. It is quite high on your finger, though. Have you tried reversing your e-ring and wedding ring placement, maybe?
I think it looks odd because it *is* odd. It’s not a common setting and it takes up a large amount of your finger. Center stones are usually set higher to allow more light to pass through which makes the stone “pop” more.
If you like it, that’s so amazing!! I promise no shade or hate. It looks unique because it is! That’s not a bad thing.
I think it’s beautiful!
This is STUNNING!
The only thing I notice is how it looks like it is way too high on your finger. I want to jump in that photo and shove it down into place Lol
Otherwise your ring itself is beautiful.
“Why is my steak too juicy!? Why is my biscuitso buttery?!” Girl..be so fr lol
Honestly I love that it looks like an eyeball. My culture is obsessed with evil eye protection so you’re kinda convincing me to get something similar 🧿🧿🧿🧿
Love it!!!
It’s really cool but personally I think it’d look better in a bezel setting and not a flat cigar band. That style reminds me of boho market jewellery and not really a style that suits high end diamond and gold. That’s just my random opinion.
It’s really pretty
I don’t think it looks odd but I think if you went with more of a domed band it would look less like evil eye jewelry. I like it as is though!
I love it. It isn’t super traditional which is nice
I love it
I’ve never thought of that style as an eyeball. Maybe you could swap out the setting if you’re worried.
And don’t think it looks odd! It’s gorgeous
It’s not my style but it’s pretty.
I’m not a fan of the EW setting for marquis or ovals etc, but your ring in particular is unique and gorgeous really. I think maybe the think wedding band with pave diamonds throws the eye a bit. Me personally, I reset the marquis NS on a white gold/plat band with the pave diamonds, sell the yellow gold and buy a gorgeous eternity band as the wedding band. But I guess I’m traditional (and old), there is zero wrong with your set – but having reset at least 5 diamonds in my life I feel that there is always the ‘maybe the next setting will be perfect!” 🙂 gorgeous set btw.
Thank you kind redditor for your award, I’ve never had one and I appreciate the kind gesture! Hugs.
