What’s the issue with my diamond?

What’s Wrong with My Diamond? Let’s Spark a Community Discussion!

Engagement rings hold profound significance in many of our lives, symbolizing love, commitment, and the journey towards a shared future. They’re not just precious jewelry, but stories, family heirlooms, or a reflection of personal style. But what happens when you start questioning your diamond? Is it the cut, the clarity, or maybe the setting? Let’s dive in and open the floor for discussion!

1. The Cut: A Facet of Perception

The cut of a diamond affects its sparkle and how light interacts with it. A poorly cut diamond can look dull, while an expertly crafted one reflects light with stunning brilliance. Have you ever found a total stunner in the store, only to feel disappointed once it’s on your hand? Share your experiences! Have you discovered tips to ensure you choose the perfect cut?

2. Clarity: What Are We Really Seeing?

Clarity often feels like the most confusing aspect when purchasing a diamond. What’s “eye clean” to one person may not be the same for another. Have you experienced buyer’s remorse over a clarity grade? Or maybe you’ve learned to see beauty in the inclusions? We want to hear your stories and insights on how clarity has affected your perception of your ring.

3. Color Considerations: The Rainbow Dilemma

Diamonds come in various colors, from colorless to shades of yellow, brown, and even rare hues like pink and blue. Has the color of your diamond surprised you? Maybe it looked different under store lights versus natural daylight? Share your color concerns and triumphs!

4. Setting: The Frame of Your Gem

The setting can change the entire look of a diamond. A simple solitaire may highlight its brilliance, while a halo can create an illusion of larger size and extra sparkle. Have you considered adjustments to your setting post-purchase? Dive into the world of settings and design preferences! What combinations have brought you pure joy?

5. Post-Purchase Regrets: True Confessions

We’ve all heard the saying, “The ring should fit the person, not just the finger.” If you’ve experienced genuine doubts about your decision after the excitement faded, you’re not alone. What would you have done differently, and what advice would you give to others currently on the hunt for their perfect ring?

6. The Emotional Connection: More Than Just a Stone

Finally, let’s talk about the emotional aspect. Sometimes, it’s not about what’s “wrong” with the diamond but how it makes us feel. Does your ring remind you of a significant memory or a loved one? Let’s discuss how these gems relate to our personal stories and the memories they hold.

Join the Conversation!

Share photos of your engagement ring, experiences, and any worries you might have about your diamond! This community is a safe space to express both joy and uncertainties. Together, we can learn more about diamonds, cut through the confusion, and maybe even redefine what our rings mean to us.

So, what’s wrong with your diamond? Or perhaps—what’s right with it? Let’s spark a dialogue! 💍✨

Ok, there are multiple issues here. I believe most of them stem back to that stone being too large for the setting, and they just tried to make it work. It looks like the stone may be too wide for the setting, so it was placed unreasonable high in the setting to accommodate that.

    1. That stone is set way too high. There shouldn’t be that big of a gap between the bottom of the stone and the setting.

    2. That hidden halo should be near the top of the stone. Once again, it looks like the setting is too small, and they elongated the prongs but to accommodate it.

    3. There shouldn’t be a gap like that between the prongs and the stone, once again those prongs are wonky and too long.

    4. There is something wrong with that stone. I can’t tell from the pictures if it’s dirty, has some weird cut that’s showing up as spots, or is just poor quality, but no, it shouldn’t look like that.

Honestly, the whole thing needs to be remade, and I’d be asking for a refund to go somewhere else.

My only comment is that I’d be scared to death of only having 3 prongs on that diamond 😳. I would add 2 more on the top 1/3 of the stone. I think with the current setting the risk of knocking your diamond out of there and losing it is very high!

It looks like the setting wasn’t made specifically for the dimensions of your stone. It’s probably a setting they had in stock & then put your stone in it. You can tell by how the gallery rail doesn’t line up with the edges of the diamond.

Also – there’s something very wrong with the diamond. I’m not sure what clarity this is supposed to be, but even I clarity stones SHOULD NOT look like this.

Please please please hold somebody accountable for this. I am so sorry this is happening.

One I’d say is cleaning. Please re-clean this at least 4X with dawn (the blue stuff) and warm water, (sit in the warm water for 15 mins at least), SOFT brush, brush, do this about 4X with the last wash add a teeny bit of alcohol or ammonia. This should help at least. lovely setting! love it.

To be blunt amount of work to fix this ring very extensive is not something I wouldn’t trust them with given what is delivered. I would push hard for a full refund if able. The lack of care and skill displayed is massively egregious.

i think your diamond has a cloud. what specs does it have SI 1? i had one like this too…

this hidden Halo thing is too far below. i think the stone doesnt sit proper in this setting. they used a from the shelf standard setting that doesnt fit the stone.

if you are in the return phase, i would recommend you to return.

The stone is set extremely high but the diamond is also a really weird deep cut meaning they can only lower it so much before it touches the band. Overall bad design, craftsmanship and diamond, I’d return it.

It looks crooked and I wouldn’t call that a hidden halo. It’s a diamond gallery bar. The prongs shouldn’t be curved like that, given even more space below the diamond. The diamond is either dirty or heavily included.

The stone has been poorly set and needs to go MUCH lower. The spots look like hairspray. Dawn and a toothbrush should get it off.

The specs looks like hairspray, very hard to get off by just wiping it. You will have to soak the ring in hot soapy water (dawn dish soap) for like 10-20 mins then use a clean brand new tooth brush to clean the ring in the soapy water. Use distilled or bottle water for less cloudy results, tap water has minerals in it which can cause build up residue.

hate to say this, but that setting is a ticking time bomb, and any seasoned jeweler or jewelry dealer with dignity would never let that out the door. that stone does not fit the setting at all, and the mix of how high it’s sitting, in addition to the lack of security with only three prongs, is a recipe for disaster. the cloudiness does seem like it could totally be hairspray if that’s something you use often. please don’t be scared to express your concerns, they are valid, and have it fixed under warranty if you can.

I’m no jeweller, but the whole setting looks off, and I’d imagine that there should be extra prongs to hd that size stone. The halo is definitely way too low as for the strange marks on top. If you’ve tried cleaning it and it’s still there, i can’t imagine what it could be.

I agree with all of the other comments, but wanted to add that you KNOW this is unacceptable. The stone, if soaking does not solve the problem, is inferior. The setting was manipulated to try to fit the stone to it, as opposed to crafting the setting FOR the stone. The hidden halo is meant for a different cut of diamond. The prongs were elongated and are “reaching” for the stone in order to hold it. There are so many things wrong with this, and anybody can see that regardless of their experience with jewelry. Please, do not let this “jeweler” get away with presenting you with a finished product that would be unacceptable to 100% of customers. I am so sorry you have to deal with this, but sincerely hope that you will stand up for yourself and not allow a so-called “professional” to do this to you. Best of luck, and if you press this as you should, I am certain this will be resolved in your favor.

From my perspective…the bottom point that makes up the diamond’s depth looks like it was cut for a round diamond even though the top is a pear cut (the bottom point is centered on the pear/diamond overall versus typically being centered on the semi-circle that makes up the round part of the pear)….that halo is meant for a deep cut pear diamond (deep cut it is…) but the bottom of the diamond looks to be cut as a round? Eg. The basket and halo are made for a pear cut and you have a top pear, with a bottom round, cut diamond….

See image: the depth has all angles in red and no side with an angle shown in green (from what I can tell…)

Not sure what to make of the surface of the diamond (or inside?)…looks like some kind of chemical reaction or abrasion on the diamonds surface (somehow?)??

Since everyone else generally answered, have you tried using a brush or something (like a diamond dazzle stick or an ultrasonic cleaner) to clean under the diamond? Maybe the “cloud” you’re seeing is from the bottom side ?

Update: thank you all for the input. To sum it up for now:

    1) setting is tragically bad, will go back to the jeweller and get the setting/head completely remade.
    2) the diamond is probably really dirty, which baffles me because I never ever use any products with the ring on and I wash it daily. But I’ll definitely get it deep cleaned.
    3) yes the depth of the pear is also tragic, it’s at 90% depth. It’s a 1.43 ct but faces up like a 1ct in my opinion. We were none the wiser when we first saw the ring so I doubt there’s anything we’ll be able to do for this.

Who did the setting? Jann Paul? This is atrocious, both the quality of the setting and the stone. I say this having bought multiple stones from Jann Paul. Who was your representative that helped you? Avery? I hope not because I don’t think she would ever let this slide as a setting and stone from Jann Paul brand to a customer. I have VVS1 stones from them and none of them look as horrible as yours. The setting is bad, it’s way too small for the stone. The halo doesn’t go there. Did you confirm the laser numbers on your stone match the numbers on GCAL certificate? Something is not adding up. Soak it in dawn dish soap for 20 minutes the use a soft bristle toothbrush to scrub the stone from underneath, Ideally with filtered or bottled water, make sure you get every nook and cranny and if this doesn’t go away, definitely ask for a return/exchange , this is unacceptable for Jann Paul. I would also verify the stone is the right one when compared to the certificate.

The spots are probably from some sort of product you spray with your ring on, like hairspray or cologne or some other type of cosmetic. To me they look like a surface buildup. You can try soaking it in hot water and dish soap for a while, then brushing with a soft toothbrush.

Everything else about the ring is poor workmanship. Honestly, I think the stone needs to be completely reset in a new setting rather than trying to do anything with the current setting. If it were me I wouldn’t trust the same jeweler to do it.

    few minor details…
One prong appears **slightly higher and bulkier**
Another prong looks thinner and pulled inward, this creates the illusion that the diamond is*tilted or off-center.*
diamond is set **noticeably high above the band,**
The gallery (basket under the stone) looks **slightly open on one side**, makes light pass unevenly and exaggerates prong mismatch.
    Diamond needs cleaning…

Jeweller checking in. The setting was definitely either a semi-mount they had in stock, or they ordered it in for a generic diamond size. Fancy shaped stones are not always a perfect measurement, and some need to have custom settings made. I don’t think there is anything “wrong” with your diamond, I think that your setting should have been custom made to the dimensions of your stone, this is why it’s sitting like this in the setting. Did you perhaps ask them to rush the timeline when it was ordered/purchased? Sometimes in order to make a tight timeline things like this can happen, as custom takes time. As far as the cloudiness, she dirty. Make sure you aren’t wearing it when you’re showering, doing hair/makeup, washing dishes etc. If I were to guess it looks like hairspray. Take it to your nearest jewellery store and ask them to toss it in the ultrasonic. If you do end up getting this remade, I would strongly recommend going with more claws.

It’s not even my ring and I feel nauseated and infuriated for you…. I live in New York City. If you need some back up, let me know when we’re rioting. I’ll be there in a jiffy.

So i agree that it should be returned and refunded and all the issues brought up but i didnt see anyone mention the band itself as well? Maybe i just missed a response about it but from the look in the 3rd photo it looks like the band itself has major imperfections as well at least on the left side of the diamond
