What’s the right timing for a reset?

How Soon is Too Soon to Reset Your Engagement Ring?

Engagement rings are often considered a symbol of love and commitment, but what happens when your taste changes or the ring no longer feels representative of your relationship? In our vibrant community dedicated to all things engagement rings, we often come across discussions about resetting rings—how soon is too soon, and is it acceptable to change what was once a cherished symbol?

The Emotional Value of Your Ring

An engagement ring is more than just a piece of jewelry; it’s a monument to your love story, filled with memories of the proposal and the journey into marriage. This emotional attachment can often complicate decisions regarding resetting. However, personal taste evolves, and what once felt perfect may no longer resonate years down the line. Is it wrong to want to update your ring to reflect who you are now?

The Practical Reasons for a Reset

Aside from changing styles, practical reasons might also come into play. Perhaps the settings have become dull, or you want to switch to an ethically sourced gemstone. Additionally, damage or wear can prompt a reset—why not give that beloved ring a facelift while preserving the essence of your relationship?

Sharing Your Experiences

This community thrives on shared experiences and advice. Many members may have faced the dilemma of whether to reset a ring early on in their marriage or after many years. Let’s share stories! Was there a specific moment that triggered your decision? Did you feel guilt, excitement, or both? What was the reset process like?

Learning from Each Other

In discussing how soon is too soon to reset, let’s also delve into the intricacies of gemstones, cuts, and settings. What styles resonate with you now, and how can we learn from one another’s journeys? Whether you’re mulling over a reset after just a couple of years or looking to update a family heirloom decades down the line, there’s much to gain from this dialogue.

Show Off Your Rings!

While we ponder these questions, we invite you to showcase the rings that have been reset or transformed. Share your before-and-after photos, and let’s celebrate the beauty of evolution in our love stories. Did the reset make the ring more you? Did it spark joy or relief?

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, how soon is too soon to reset an engagement ring may not have a one-size-fits-all answer. It boils down to personal values, relationship dynamics, and individual growth. Let’s create a safe space for discussion, sharing and celebrating the multifaceted nature of love and commitment. Whether you’re looking forward to a reset or still basking in the glow of your original ring, we can learn from each other’s experiences and make this journey richer together.

What are your thoughts? When did you decide to reset, or is it something you’ve been considering? Let’s talk! 🌟💍

As long as you love the diamond everything is fine, you can change the band any way you like

I had the same issue and just took mine in to be reset after the first time wearing it. Be fore warned, gold prices have gone up astronomically. Even with melting down the old dainty ring, two different places quoted me 1-1.5k to move it to a thicker solitaire setting.

Good on you for realizing so soon that this setting isn’t safe! That gorgeous diamond would fall out so easily. The bead prongs, for one, are notorious for not covering stones. From the side it looks like the jeweler that made this used a generic setting. There’s huge gaps where the prongs should be hugging the diamond. And of course, a gallery rail is necessary to hold the underside in place.

I don’t think there’s any such thing as “too soon”. You or your fiance can spend your money however you want. 🙂 With that said, I think your idea to put your beautiful diamond in a more secure setting is a solid plan. Congrats!

A jeweler I trust said that the oval stones need a gallery rail; if there’s an issue with one of the prongs the stone could fall out otherwise. The different prong types aren’t more or less secure but you’re entitled to what you want.

While it’s hard to tell without seeing a CAD that lists measurements, just looking with my eyes I can see that I would personally feel nervous about wearing this every day.

I would reset and make sure you get a CAD for whatever design you move forward with that confirms the band is at least 2mm wide and 1.8mm thick. It’s not that anything below that is automatically a disaster, it’s just those measurements will still be quite dainty and they will be your best bet for wearing this ring daily for the rest of your days!

Obviously gold is soft and prongs can move over time no matter how good the quality so do make sure you have your ring checked over by a jeweler you trust around once per year OR if you notice the prongs catching on things a lot (this can indicate that they need to be tightened).

But beautiful stone and congratulations on your engagement!

Oh gosh it looks like an accident waiting to happen – the diamond is stunning but I agree, you need a thicker band and a support band around the rock and claws. ASAP. I’m glad your fiance is happy with resetting it. Congrats on your engagement!

My mom lost her ring a while ago only to discover it in pieces on the garage floor because apparently she’d driven over it. All the pieces survived but will have to be reset.

    Make it thicker.

Some companies offer free exchanges within 30 days if youre not satisfied with it ( even if there is engraving ), but if it’s a custom band/setting then maybe no ( for example the band is a 1.8 mm but you requested that particular band to be made as a 2 mm, so it may not be exchangeable ).

Either way, it doesn’t hurt to ask. But if you miss the window then theres no around it except buying a new ring 😢

I hope you get what you want! Congrats on the engagement! 🥰

I think especially since you’re concerned about the security of the stone it’s not too soon. I see a lot of posts on here with gorgeous rings that have intricate settings and details and small stones and a common concern is the security of the setting and worry about possibly damaging the stone.

Yeah, I would agree that the band is too thin. It won’t hold up long term. And the lack of a gallery is making my jeweller brain nervous. Maybe you and fiancé can redesign it together, make a date out of it!

You’re correct in wanting a more secure setting. This one will cause you to lose the diamond. Also correct in wanting a thicker band. Band should be at least 1.8 mm or it will bend

I have to admit these settings where they sit so high make me paranoid I’d knock it and lose it! I think speak to your fiance. Come at it from a “I don’t think it would be a safe thing to keep it like this, it doesn’t feel secure and I wouldn’t want to lose this beautiful stone as it’s so precious to me”… sort of thing. As when some women want it reset, it’s due to style or looks

If it was just the visuals you didn’t like, I’d suggest live with it for a while and see if your views change but this is a super dainty setting. It makes me think of a presentation solitaire where the main focus is the diamond but after accepting/getting engaged, you get to design and customize the final ring.
I would be concerned about the current setting holding up over time- like you mentioned, very thin and the diamond could be set lower if you already find yourself snagging it on things.

My fiancé and I both were taking about resetting my ring the day after he proposes. He designed it online and he wasn’t happy with the hidden halo part, and I said we could lower the stone a bit to make it less tall. We haven’t done anything yet but I think if you’re both on the same page then why not?
